About Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchangers play a crucial role in many applications across the Oil and Gas industry, from oil refineries and natural gas processing plants, to offshore platforms and pipelines. Heat Exchangers are designed to transfer heat between two or more fluids by using the principles of thermal conduction. A cooled fluid is brought into close contact with a hot industrial process or piece of equipment, allowing for the exchange of heat between two mediums.

There are many types of heat exchangers used across operations in the Oil and Gas industry; the most common include shell and tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, double pipe heat exchangers, and finned tube heat exchangers. Every type of heat exchanger is affected by differential pressure, and deploying a DP Transmitter to monitor differential pressure measurements across the heat exchanger can help provide leading and lagging indicators for fouling.

What is Fouling?

Fouling refers to the buildup of unwanted material on heat transfer surfaces during heating and cooling processes. This issue can be caused by several factors, including scale buildup and the deposition of particles from the process fluid. Fouling can diminish heating efficiency, lengthen heating times, and even lead to blockages that impede fluid flow.

HDPT Differential Pressure (DP) Transmitter

OleumTech Differential Pressure (DP) Transmitters are deployed on heat exchangers to measure pressure drop within the Heat Exchanger to allow operations to get as close to the maximum allowable pressure drop without going over, ensuring the sweet spot is met for optimal efficiency.
